The Mosquito Magnet
A mosquito magnet is similar to the common mosquito trap, and the term
is often used interchangeably in conversation. Designed to draw in mosquitoes,
much like the action of a magnet, these machines capture and eliminate
bugs.
Mosquito magnets are growing in popularity, most likely because they
are a clean, safe way to create a pest-free zone in the backyard, on the
patio, at the cottage, and in any outdoor area where insects are a problem.
There
is a leading model whose actual brand name is ‘Mosquito Magnet’.
Available in different sizes, this mosquito trap attracts flying insects
with the use of CO2 which mimics the exhaled gases of warm blooded mammals.
Mosquito traps also use thermal imaging and light to create the warm environment
that insects seek. Quality brands have a slow release attractant, ensuring
constant effectiveness.
Optimal Setting for a Mosquito Magnet
- Where? The mosquito magnet can cover an area ranging from 1/2 to 1
1/2 acres. The trap should be set up in a place that is upwind of the
known breeding grounds, and ideally, between the breeding grounds and
your backyard living space. The trap should be installed in an open,
shady spot, 30 to 40 feet from the chosen area.
- When? The set up of a mosquito magnet is only necessary during mosquito
season; for the most part, that would be when the air temperature is
over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In warm climates, mosquito magnets are typically
needed all year round. As different breeds of mosquitoes are active
at different times of the day and evening, a mosquito trap should run
around the clock.
Additional Benefits
Mosquito magnets not only eliminate mosquitoes, but they also kill other
annoying insects such as black flies, midges and gnats. Because this product
does not make use of a harmful chemical as a deterrent, it is considered
a green, eco friendly method of protection against biting insects.
When compared to the “zappers” of yesterday, and the gooey
insect paper strips of yesteryear that hung from ceilings, mosquito magnets
are more convenient, cleaner and easier to set up and maintain. They can
be wiped clean and plugged in. For models that operate on propane instead
of electricity, it is a matter of refilling the propane tank when it reaches
a low level.
Mosquito Magnet Brand Models
There are three levels of protection offered by Mosquito Magnets: the
Executive, Independence and Patriot models.
Executive – With an LCD panel for reading and plenty of settings
to choose from, this model is high tech. Capable of covering a one-acre
area, and equipped with settings that can extend the life of your propane
tank, this product boasts “Smart Technology”.
Independence – This one button start, cordless
model functions on batteries. It also provides up to one-acre of coverage.
Its easy operation renders it a popular product.
Patriot – This model runs on electricity and comes
with a 50-foot power cord that enables you to set it up in the ideal spot.
Equipped with its “CounterFlow” technology”, it also
has coverage of up to one acre.
Mosquito traps have a broad price range that can accommodate every budget.
Although top-of-the-line quality traps and magnets are typically more
expensive, many homeowners find them well worth the extra dollars. Enjoy
a pest-free yard!
